This video shows how you can work with ‘take it’ & ‘Leave it” using a dogs toy. The dog is given permission to ‘take it’; the reward is playing with the toy. When you ask the dog to ‘leave it’ if they do not relinquish the toy then show them a yummy treat, they will drop the toy for the treat. As they drop the toy say ‘leave it’ and then reward them for letting go. If you work on part one of this behavior first with a large dog treat your dog should already understand the ‘take it’ and ‘leave it’ cues and be able to quickly generalize the cue to other items, such as the toy.
